Professor Dingwall is  is a consulting sociologist and part-time professor at Nottingham Trent University. His paper looks into the relationship between the institutional regulation of research and its social costs on innovation and discovery. If regulation is understood as part of the stabilization process of large organizations, he argues, then it may contribute to undercutting one of the unique societal functions of universities and public research establishments.
