The Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council have invited Erica Haimes, PEALS Professorial Fellow, to join a small expert group which will oversee research (conducted by 'Opinion Leader') into public attitudes towards the feedback of incidental and other health-related findings in research. This is currently an area of intense public debate.
The expert group will look at research in areas such as medical imaging and genetics and will address such issues as the incidental finding of a brain tumour from an MRI scan taken for a cognitive science research study. The group is due to report in early 2012 and the Wellcome Trust and the MRC will use the findings to develop principles for researchers to consider with respect to health-related findings in research.
