This month Sarah Skyrme joins us as a new PhD student, funded by both the ESRC and the EU Network of Excellence TREAT-NMD.
The partnership between the ESRC and Treat NMD will ensure that the research undertaken by Sarah will feed into policy and practice, as well as generating new academic knowledge.
Treat NMD is a large EU network, aiming to sustain and improve clinical practice across Europe, in the treatment of a range of rare neuromuscular diseases, the most common of which are Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
The research undertaken in the network raises important questions about the involvement of young people with such diseases in medical research, including issues of informed consent. These questions are the focus of the PhD, which will involve Sarah interviewing boys and young men with DMD on their views about being asked to be involved, what influences their participation and what issues this raises for how we think about and manage consent in this complex area.
For further information about Sarah's work you will find her listed on our postgraduate pages.
