The Human Genetics Commission, which advises the government about the regulation of genetics, launched a major consultation on genetics and reproductive decision making.
PEALS and the Centre for Life organized a public meeting to debate the issues raised by genetic screening and reproductive choice, on 23rd September, in the Bioscience Centre at the Centre for Life.
Speakers:
Dr Helen Cameron, consultant obstetrician, Sunderland Royal Hospital;
Professor Alison Murdoch, consultant gynaecologist, Centre for
Reproductive Medicine, Newcastle;
Professor John Burn, director of Life Knowledge Park, member of the
Human Genetics Commission;
Dr Tom Shakespeare, social scientist, PEALS.
The speakers explained current practices and future possibilities in antenatal screening and assisted conception, and explored the social and ethical questions that these raise. These presentations were followed by questions and open discussion.
