Welcome to the Philosophical Studies Website

Philosophical Studies is an interdisciplinary, collegiate group for promoting pragmatic and scholarly studies of knowledge-human interfaces. It is an alliance of experienced lecturers, researchers and supervisors representing diverse research interests interrogating the relationship between conceptual frameworks and the arts, culture, the environment, ethics, metaphysics, religion, science and society. Its chief aim is to initiate and structure the academic programme, funding, and implementation of such studies, e.g. via seminars, research papers and meetings, degree programmes, and links with other Institutions.

In particular, Philosophical Studies is the home of the BA and MPhil degree programmes in Philosophical Studies of Knowledge and Human Interests. Every year more than 160 students take part in these programmes which embody an innovative educational approach in the context-driven, personalised project. In the 2007-8 National Student Survey, Philosophical Students rated both the student experience and the teaching on the course extremely highly with 100% of them satisfied with the programme overall.

The Project

Philosophical Studies at Newcastle is a novel educational initiative in personalised learning and a unique aspect of this course is that our students engage in a context-driven project chosen by the learner him or herself, using it as a vehicle both for developing a personal portfolio of skills and also acquiring knowledge that is relevant and salient for today’s world.
