BA (Hons.) Philosophical Studies: Knowledge and Human Interests

As a student reading for the BA (Hons.) Philosophical Studies: Knowledge and Human Interests, you will take a series of modules looking at philosophical and sociological aspects of the way knowledge is acquired and transmitted and at patterns of rational discourse. The philosophical and conceptual approach of the course, combined with its strong project focus, will develop your ability to separate knowledge from opinion; it will teach you how to recognise the ‘truth’ should you encounter it in your office, in a novel, in a picture gallery, and so on, and how to communicate it to others. Teaching is carried out in traditional lectures and also small tutorial discussion groups.

Uniquely, Philosophical Studies pioneers an innovative educational approach known as the project. Traditional modules in philosophical theory are applied to a personal, context-driven project that examines and interrogates a specific object. The learner is encouraged to develop a practical bond between the conceptual aspects of the lectures and empirical reality. Project seminars integrate and harmonise all facets of the programme as well as providing the opportunity to debate abstract concepts in a relevant way and within the framework of a meaningful context.
