Programme Overview

This programme aims to provide an interdisciplinary training in scientific principles necessary for understanding the interactions of agriculture with the environment. There is an emphasis on sustainability and the ecological consequences of unsound management.

Through the taught modules and assignments you develop a flexible, technical knowledge and skills base, which is essential for a career in research, development or extension relating to problems of sustainability in farming systems, environmental management and rural development.
Compulsory modules will develop knowledge and skills in core concepts such as:

  • sustainable development and environmental change
  • quantitative techniques, experimental design and data analysis
  • assessment of land use capability, habitat potential, risks of water pollution, and soil quality and ecosystem services
  • analysis, interpretation and presentation of field data with regard to environment and habitat assessment
  • science, policy and action underlying climate change and land use

A selection of optional modules allows you to develop further knowledge and skills in areas of particular interest.

The Masters project provides an opportunity to undertake an investigation similar to one you might experience in the workplace. After training in designing and delivering a project based on a laboratory or field-based investigation, you will collect, analyse and interpret data around the topic you have identified and produce a thesis reporting your investigation and results in a critical manner. This research project and thesis may be undertaken overseas.
