Programme Overview

This MA is designed for both experienced teachers and students who have little or no teaching experience.

It enables you to develop your particular interests in learning or teaching by choosing appropriate specialist options including:

  • TESOL
  • second language acquisition
  • discourse analysis
  • cross-cultural communication
  • developing thinking and multimedia

Students who reach a satisfactory standard in their taught modules may be able to progress to the Integrated PhD in Educational and Applied Linguistics subject to a successful interview. 

+Entrance Requirements

An upper second-class Honours degree or higher, or an international equivalent, in a relevant language-related subject. Applications from candidates without language-related degrees but with at least two years of language teaching experience will also be considered.

Applicants whose first language is not English should have IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.5 in writing. 6.5 in reading, and 6.0 in all other sub sections, or equivalent.

Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has rules for international students regarding minimum English language requirements.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
