The MSc in Bioinformatics is a one-year advanced Master's programme designed for students who have a good degree in biological sciences or computing science.
This interdisciplinary programme is based in the School of Computing Science and taught jointly with the Schools of Mathematics and Statistics and Biology, and the institutes of Cell and Molecular Biosciences and Genetic Medicine.
The programme will provide foundational skills in bioinformatics together with specialist skills such as:
with a significant focus on the development of research skills.
The MSc aims to equip you with the necessary skills to contribute to the post-genomic developments that are rapidly becoming the key focus of bioinformatics research.
Prior experience with computers or computer programming is not required. Students with mathematical, engineering or other scientific backgrounds will also be considered.
The programme is ideal for students aiming for careers in industry or academia.

A minimum of a second-class Honours degree, or international equivalent, in any science discipline including biological sciences, engineering sciences, computing sciences, mathematics or physical sciences. Equivalent industrial and academic experience is also considered. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.
Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
