Research Areas

We welcome suitable postgraduates in any of our areas of research expertise. We cover a vast range of classical subjects, from material culture and history, through language and literature, to philosophy and the history of science and medicine. We also have strong links with related disciplines such as History, Archaeology, History of Medicine and Modern Languages.

Our research specialities include: the ancient Near East; Greco–Roman culture and religion; early Christianity and patristics; Greek art and archaeology; the history and archaeology of Roman Italy; Latin language and literature; the reception of the classical tradition; ancient science and medicine; and ancient Greek and Roman patristics and philosophy.

MLitt supervision is normally available in the following areas:

Ancient history and classical archaeology
This area includes: economic history; the history and archaeology of pre-Roman and Roman Italy; Greco–Roman religion; the social and cultural history of the Roman Empire; Roman Greece; Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt; History of the Jews; Greek art and archaeology; the history and archaeology of the ancient Near East (Professor A Spawforth, Dr M Brosius, Mr J Paterson, Dr R Smith, Dr L Capponi).

Classical language and literature
This area of research includes Latin language and literature; ancient oratory and rhetoric; Latin poetry; ancient historiography; Greek tragedy; Greek influence on later literature (Professor J Moles, Dr J Wisse, Dr S Phillippo).

Philosophy and science
Philosophy and science covers ancient and early Christian philosophy; the history of Greek and Roman medicine (Professor P van der Eijk, Professor J Moles, Dr T Rütten, Dr J Wilberding).

+Entrance Requirements

An upper-second-class Honours degree, or international equivalent and a Master’s degree in classics or a related subject. A research proposal is also required. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, with 6.5 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other sub-sections, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or equivalent.   

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has rules for international students regarding minimum English language requirements.

Applications are considered throughout the year although specific deadlines for funding may apply. Wherever possible applicants are interviewed. Further application advice is available from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
