Programme Overview

This programme will provide students with an all round education in the principles and practice of solid organ transplantation above and below the diaphragm. The programme at Newcastle is distinctive in providing participants with an in-depth appreciation of Transplantation Sciences in the clinical setting, alongside linking academic theory with ‘real’ workplace practice.

The programme has been developed in partnership with the Institute of Transplantation at the Freeman Hospital, and it is here that students will be based for the duration of their studies.

The programme aims to develop student’s knowledge and understanding of;

• The major issues and developments around clinical transplantation
• The major ethical and legal issues associated with solid organ transplantation
• The processes of liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation from initial identification of  donor recipients through to post-operative care
• The process of heart, lung and heart-lung transplantation from initial identification of donor recipients through to post operative care

The programme will also develop student’s clinical awareness in;

• The critical assessment of short and long term strategies for the use of immune suppression to prevent transplantation rejection, the different mechanisms by which the immune system may reject transplanted organs and the impact of recent clinical advances in this field
• The various surgical problems that can occur in clinical transplantation, and how these can differ between different types of solid organ graft
• The clinical choices available for the maintenance of different solid organ grafts

The programme is suitable for students who have had experience of varying roles within an NHS Healthcare setting including; Medical and Surgical Trainees, Clinical Trial Managers, Transplant Coordinators and Nurses.

On completion students should possess practical expertise in;

• The identification of key risk factors in post-transplantation including rejection, infection and PTLD
• The evaluation of appropriate choices for the maintenance of different solid organ graft including tolerance
• The production of a personal care plan for patients undergoing solid organ transplantation
