Programme Overview

This programme will provide students with an advanced level of knowledge and understanding of the main theories, models and ideas in the study of cross cultural communication. Students will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate originality in the application of knowledge and how research in these disciplines can advance their boundaries of knowledge.

The programme aims to develop students’ critical understanding of;

  • the complex nature of culture, social and cultural identity
  • the influence of human communication on culture, and culture’s influence on human communication
  • the nature of social relationships and wider societal issues and how they can be informed by theory derived from the various sub-disciplines
  • the main methodological approaches used in the study of cross-cultural communication and applied linguistics such as surveys, ethnographic observation, interviews and discourse analysis
  • the impact ethical issues have on research

The programme at Newcastle is distinctive through its multidisciplinary teaching where students learn language and communication and specialism studies. Students are also able to gain hands-on experience in their Research Portfolio Project.

On completion of the programme, graduates will be equipped with the ability;

  • to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively
  • to show originality in tackling and solving problems
  • to critically evaluate current research and advanced scholarship in cross cultural communication
  • to show a systematic understanding and critical awareness of current problems with, and new insights into, the nature of knowledge of cross-cultural communication
  • to have a deep understanding of the nature of culture and of group identity and their manifestation and realisation in individual communication practices

Graduates will gain the knowledge and understanding, skills and aptitudes necessary to proceed into careers in cross-cultural and international professional contexts or to undertake further advanced studies in Cross-Cultural Communication.

+Modules

The programme consists of 120 credits of taught modules and a 60 credit research portfolio. Modules include disciplines in both language and communication, for example: Sociolinguistics, English in the World, International Business Talk and The Social Psychology of Communication.

The Research Portfolio provides specific opportunities for skills development through the construction of a research plan, through synthesising knowledge and by participating in workshops and individual meetings with supervisors and module leaders.
