This new programme builds on the success of the suite of established Archaeology Masters' programmes, but offers students a unique opportunity to study early Medieval Europe and Byzantine Archaeology, for which Newcastle has a growing international reputation. The programme will be particularly relevant for students with a background in ancient history, archaeology, art history, classics and related disciplines. It will prepare you to study at PhD level, or to enter a profession requiring high-level skills in literacy, research and project management.
Throughout the programme students have access to outstanding library holdings and unique museum resources, including the £26million Great North Museum, of which the University is a partner. The museum has bought together internationally important collections of Prehistoric, Greek, Etruscan, Roman and Romano-British artefacts. You will also have access to specialist facilities including the Gertrude Bell Archive, the Wolfson archaeology Laboratory and the Shefton collections of Greek archaeology. With Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site close by, students are also offered the opportunity to undertake regular study trips and fieldwork projects on site.
Optional field trips are available to Rome, Athens, the Lower Rhine Frontier and throughout the UK. The cost of each overseas trip is approximately £450 and this covers travel, food and accommodation.
