Programme Overview

This programme complements the MSc Petroleum Geochemistry and aims to equip Earth science, environmental science and chemistry graduates with the advanced skills, knowledge and understanding appropriate for a career in environmental control and management in the petroleum industry and its related service industries.

+Modules

You complete compulsory taught modules followed by a summer research project written up as a dissertation.

The programme explores the formation and chemical composition of oil and petroleum in modules such as sedimentary organic matter, molecular marker compounds and chemical analysis of organic matter.

You will also study the natural environment in modules such as aqueous geochemistry and introduction to microbiology and the microbial transformation of pollutants. Finally the programme investigates the impact of contamination on the environment with modules including environmental chemical analysis, sources fates and control of pollutants and petroleum in the environment.

A range of dissertation projects is offered including laboratory, field work and computer-based modelling. You will have the opportunity to work alongside one of our established research groups, and some placement projects may be available with industrial partners.
