Programme Overview

This MA provides an in-depth grounding in the politics and policy of the EU. The programme covers the intricate politics, institutions, law and policies of the European Union as well as the international and global political context in which the EU is located. This MA is a good preparation for graduates who wish to develop a career with a European dimension.

+Modules

The focus is on contemporary developments in the European Union in terms of its politics, law and policies. You take compulsory modules, optional modules, and complete a dissertation.

Teaching is seminar based and most modules are assessed by a 4,000-word research paper on a topic chosen by the student in consultation with the module leader. Students complete a 12,000-word dissertation during the summer.

+Entrance Requirements

An upper-second-class Honours degree or above, or international equivalent, in politics/international studies or a related discipline. Other qualifications or relevant professional experience are also considered.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent.

Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has rules for international students regarding minimum English language requirements.

+Scholarships and Other Sources of Funding

For UK/EU students, full or partial fees bursaries may be available from the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology.

International Students, consult your own government for funding. The University offers International Scholarships, and there are funding opportunities by external organisations available.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
