Programme Overview

This new suite of programmes and continuing professional development modules are designed to provide graduates and industry professionals with a broad range of knowledge, skills and practical expertise within the heritage and tourism sector, including heritage, museum and art gallery institutions, organisations or agencies. The suite will also be of value to professional interested in developing freelancing skills.

You will gain advanced knowledge, understanding and skill associated with heritage management and heritage tourism management including:

  • Engagement and evaluation of the various forms and historical development within the sector
  • Analysis of International conventions, national legislation, along with associated regulations, policy, and advocacy
  • Critical understanding of the key philosophical principles, theories and conceptual approaches
  • Collection, analysis and interpretation of relevant research data

The programmes have been specifically designed with employability as a key feature, with a relevant and appropriate balance between theory and practice and the opportunity to critically engage with the content.

These e-learning programmes are delivered online using a variety of innovative e-learning materials and activities. You will be able to make the most of the learning opportunities in your areas of interest and geographical location and can plan your studies into other work and life commitments.

Students on the MA and PGDip complete a bespoke eight-week work based project module giving you an opportunity to put into practice the theory and skills that you have learnt. Industry professional may complete the project in your place of work, students who are not employed in the heritage tourism sector will be assisted in defining a work-related project with their Module Leader.

For these e-learning programmes, all students receive an online module handbook containing Guided Independent Study methods and assessed work, assignment information, aims and learning outcomes and a list of reading resources.

These academic materials have been developed by specialist research staff at the University and industry practitioners from across the world.

+Entrance Requirements

Normally an upper-second-class honours degree or international equivalent. Work experience within the heritage/ museum and art gallery sectors is desirable, although not essential.

We will also consider applicants on an individual basis from those who may not hold a degree, but who are able to demonstrate considerable work experience in the heritage/museums/galleries sector, or in tourism associated work.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each of the component areas, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or equivalent.

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) may offer funding.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
