This programme is aimed at students with a specific interest in State affairs and the interaction of States with other actors such as international organisations and individuals.
The programme will enable you to understand the nature, structure and function of the international legal system and its influence on strategic national and international policies. A critical approach will be taken on contemporary challenges such as the role of foreign affairs in the protection of human rights, the use of nuclear weapons, and the resolution of international disputes. You will also gain a comprehensive understanding of the rights and obligations of individuals in an international context in view of recent atrocities such as war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.

Normally an upper second-class Honours degree, or an international equivalent, in law or a wide range of subject areas including: business, finance, politics, environmental science and geography. We will, however, consider individual cases with a lower second-class Honours degree on their merit.
Applicants whose first language is not English and who have not undertaken any programme of study recently which was taught in English require IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in English writing, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent.
In some instances it may be possible to offer a place to an applicant with an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (but at least 6.0 in writing) or equivalent, subject to satisfactory completion of a 10-week pre-sessional English language course available at INTO Newcastle University.
The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has rules for international students regarding minimum English language requirements.

The closing date for taught LLM applications is 31 August but late applications may be considered on their merits. However, international students applying for September 2012 entry should apply by Friday 13 July 2012 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.
Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
