Programme Overview

The programme aims to equip you with the research skills necessary to undertake independent study in linguistics. It is characterised by its significant flexibility and covers a wide range of areas, including theoretical and general linguistics, descriptive linguistics (whether focusing on English or on other languages), applied linguistics, and combinations of these specialisms.

The MA in Linguistics has three specialist pathways, leading to different awards:

  • MA Linguistics: English Language
  • MA Linguistics: Language Acquisition
  • MA Linguistics: European Languages

+Entrance Requirements

An upper-second-class Honours degree or higher, or equivalent. Your degree should ideally include some study of linguistics or, English language, or an appropriate related discipline (e.g. a language other than English, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, cognitive science, computer science, mathematics). If you are in doubt, contact the degree programme director. 

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 100 (Internet-based) or 600 (paper-based), or equivalent. Applicants whose IELTS score is between 6.0 and 7.0, or equivalent, at the time of application must complete an appropriate pre-sessional English language course at INTO Newcastle University.

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has rules for international students regarding minimum English language requirements.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
