Programme Overview

The programme is designed to produce graduates who have developed a well-founded knowledge and understanding of marine engineering and its practical application. On this programme you will gain a sound theoretical grasp of the subject and practical application, both of which are regarded as essential to the process of becoming a professional marine technologist.

The MSc in Marine Engineering provides an overview of topics associated with 'Naval architecture (hull and propulsor)' and 'Marine Engineering (machinery).

The programme will develop your knowledge and understanding of:

  • Design, selection, analysis and installation of marine transmission systems
  • Key areas associated with advanced offshore design
  • Mathematics and physics appropriate to marine technology and related fields
  • Management principles and business practices
  • Production practice including codes of practice and regulatory framework

The programme will also develop your practical skills so that you will be able to:

  • Select and apply appropriate mathematical and computer based methods for modelling and analysing relevant problems
  • Use scientific principles in the development of engineering solutions to practical problems
  • Use scientific principles in the modelling and analysis of engineering systems, processes and products
  • Test design ideas practically through laboratory work or simulation with technical analysis and to evaluate the results critically
  • Integrate and evaluate information and data from a variety of sources

This programme aims to produce graduates who are recognised by the maritime industry worldwide as fully equipped to contribute at a professional engineering level.

+Entrance Requirements

A second-class Honours degree, or international equivalent. Relevant professional experience is desirable, although not essential.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent. 

Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has rules for international students regarding minimum English language requirements.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
