Programme Overview

This programme equips you to enter employment as a professional engineer and progress to Chartered Engineer or equivalent status. Widening your knowledge, understanding and skills you will be able to contribute effectively in a wide range of mechanical engineering environments.

You study in depth a range of topics of industrial significance in your chosen areas of interest and are offered a wide scope of topics for your individual project, which it may be possible to undertake in collaboration with industry.

You are provided with advanced knowledge, understanding and skills in:

  • mechanical engineering principles, practices, materials, components and systems
  • research and information retrieval, data collection and analysis
  • critical evaluation and effective application
  • current and developing practices in the field

+Modules

The taught component of the programme makes use of a combination of lectures, tutorials and seminars, and assessment is by written examination and in-course assessed work. The project is assessed by dissertation.

+Entrance Requirements

A second-class Honours degree or higher, or international equivalent, in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 79 (Internet-based), or equivalent.

Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has rules for international students regarding minimum English language requirements.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.

+Further Information

Graduates of this MSc programme, who pass with merit, are normally offered the opportunity to progress to PhD study either on a self-funded project or on a funded PhD studentship.
