Programme Overview

This programme is for graduate engineers who want to specialise in the design and operation of offshore oil and gas platforms, production, process and transportation of hydrocarbons, whilst developing an awareness of the needs of society and the environment.

Study Offshore and Environmental Technology and you will gain:

  • a sound theoretical grasp of offshore engineering, and the ability to apply your knowledge practically through real world industry projects
  • awareness of social and environmental needs when applying engineering knowledge 
  • experience of testing design ideas through laboratory work or simulation plus technical analysis and critical results evaluation 
  • confidence in applying professional judgement to balance risks, costs, benefits, safety, reliability, aesthetics and environmental impact
  • transferable skills in computing, IT, data collection and analysis, problem formulation and solving, and communication

On completion of the programme you will:

  • be able to design creative and innovative systems, whilst applying mathematical and computer based methods for modelling and analysis
  • be skilled in management principles and business practices, including project-management
  • have the knowledge required to contribute to the international maritime industry at professional engineering level

At Newcastle University you will benefit from outstanding facilities including: a research vessel designed by staff and students, the only cavitation tunnel in the UK, a hydrodynamics laboratory, and the Dove Marine Laboratory – a costal base ideal for field teaching.

The programme is also available with a Preliminary Year if you have a technical qualification rather than a degree.

+Entrance Requirements

A  second-class Honours degree, or equivalent, in engineering or another relevant subject. Please contact us with details of your degree if you are in any doubt. Practical experience in the relevant field is desirable, although not essential.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent.

Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has rules for international students regarding minimum English language requirements.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
