MPhil and PhD supervision is normally available in any of the areas of psychology where there are research strengths in Newcastle.
Clinical and health psychology
Development and assessment of cognitive models of, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) treatment for, bipolar disorder, psychosis, anxiety and developmental disorders; developmental disorders of perception and cognition.
Behaviour and evolution
Studies of animal and human behaviour including the evolutionary psychology of mate choice, attractiveness, and co-operation, and evolutionary approaches to personality.
Visual perception and human cognition
Perception of natural scenes; psychophysics and attention; visual social cognition and face processing; advertising and consumer behaviour.
Development psychology
We have particular strength in developmental disorders such as Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Williams Syndrome.

MPhil – an upper-second-class Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (see above).
PhD - an upper-second-class Honours degree, or equivalent, plus normally further research experience and/or a further qualification such as an MRes.
Candidates whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent. Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.

There are three possible start dates for your research degree:

• 15 April 2013
• or 23 September 2013
However these dates are not mandatory and in some circumstances permission can be granted for alternative start dates.
Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
