Programme Overview

This MSc programme aims to develop student’s knowledge, skills and understanding in the field of rail freight and logistics, with a particular focus on the use of advanced performance systems analysis and research within this context.

The programme places an emphasis on the growing interest at both a national and international level in rail freight services, specifically the importance of rail freight practices and logistics policy in securing a more sustainable future.

The programme provides students with a practical understanding of:
• the broad range of analytical and simulation modelling research methodologies commonly used in the development and analysis of rail logistics systems management
• the fundamental rail freight design and logistics systems relevant to transport management and engineering
• the key professional safety, security, environmental and ethical issues typical to the modern rail freight and logistics industry
• the concepts, policy and practices unique to the rail industry and how these are being used to create a more sustainable future

The programme aims to equip graduates with the skills and qualifications necessary to pursue a management and/or engineering career in rail freight and logistics.

+Modules

The programme offers two specialist pathways:

  • Stream 1, Operations Management and Economics (OME)
  • Stream 2, Technical Management and Engineering (TME)

All candidates will be allocated to Stream 1 in the first instance.

All students take compulsory modules and a major rail project.

Throughout the programme you will have access to the expertise of academics from the School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering and our research centre, NewRail.

The taught component of the programme makes use of a combination of lectures, simulation modelling, individual guided studies, students-let activities and seminars. Assessment is by written examination, presentations and in-course assessed work. The project is assessed by thesis.
