Programme Overview

This ESRC-recognised programme is designed to prepare you to undertake a PhD. It consists of a mixture of generic research training modules offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Research Training Programme combined with more specialised modules covering both research training and specialist knowledge.

The programme explores the recent (20th-century) history of linguistics and the philosophy of linguistics. Tensions between different conceptions of language are also examined as well as the issues surrounding research methodology in linguistics, sociolinguistics and the sociology of language more specifically.

You will gain a working knowledge of the methodology and skills in quantitative and qualitative research in language and linguistic studies by carrying out a literature review and independent fieldwork, and undertaking sociolinguistic analysis using a variety of mathematical and computational tools.
