The Diploma consists of taught modules. Most modules are assessed solely by course work and, in some instances, presentations. During Semester 1 a series of modules provide a comprehensive introduction to the theories, methods, structures and techniques of planning. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, group discussions and workshops. Teamwork skills are developed through the group project on sustainable development.

In Semester 2, the emphasis shifts towards synthesising the knowledge acquired in Semester 1 and further developing planning and teamworking skills. A major part of this Semester is the project-based module, spatial strategies. The module includes a field trip to Europe where you have the opportunity to develop a comprehensive redevelopment strategy for a local area drawing on the knowledge acquired in Semesters 1 and 2 and from examples and case studies that have a European context.

During the programme you also develop specialist knowledge and skills in one of the following areas: conservation and the city; regenerating places; planning in developing countries; issues in landscape planning and sustainability; or cities, security and resilience. In Semester 1, you undertake a lecture-based module in your chosen subject and this is followed by an individual project in Semester 2.

Normally a minimum of a second-class Honours degree or equivalent in any subject. An upper-second-class Honours degree is preferred. We will also consider applicants on an individual basis with lower class Honours degrees and those with non-standard qualifications and/or relevant professional experience.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
