Our pure mathematics staff are prominent in two fields: functional analysis and geometric algebra. In analysis, one subgroup concentrates on operator theory and function theory, the other on more algebraic topics such as Banach algebras, cohomology and modules. In algebra there are subgroups devoted to the study of infinite groups and the study of finite classical groups and their geometries (Dr R Bocklandt, Dr M Dritschel, Dr A Duncan, Professor P Jorgensen, Dr O King, Dr Z Lykova, Professor S Rees, Professor G Robertson, Dr A Vdovina, Dr M White).
Our staff have research interests in fluid mechanics, astrophysics and cosmology. In fluid dynamics, research is undertaken in numerical modelling of quantum, classical and astrophysical fluids. In quantum fluids we have experts in the properties of superfluid liquid Helium and Bose-Einstein condensates. Research in astrophysical fluids covers areas as diverse as the Earth’s core, planetary dynamos, acretion discs and galaxies. In cosmology, our main interests are in the very early universe and quantum gravity (Professor C Barenghi, Dr P Bushby, Dr C Campbell, Dr A Fletcher, Professor I Moss, Dr N Proukakis, Dr G Sarson, Professor A Shukurov, Dr D Toms).
We have a strong international reputation for research in bioinformatics, biostatistics, Bayes methodology and applied probability. Our interests centre on: Bayesian statistics; longitudinal and event history analysis; Bayesian design of clinical experiments; extreme value theory; non-parametric maximum likelihood; statistical bioinformatics; applied probability; stochastic processes and the optimal control of stochastic systems.

We organise several seminar programmes including: discipline-specific programmes with external and internal speakers; a programme on Bayesian statistics and bioinformatics; a postgraduate programme (organised by postgraduates for postgraduates); a Royal Statistical Society (North East Local Group) programme.
Our Science, Agriculture and Engineering Graduate School provides training in professional/key skills and research techniques, supports personal development, hosts postgraduate events and has links with several specialist graduate training networks. The School provides funding for attending conferences and UK statistics students are eligible for an enhanced studentship scheme. In addition, students may supplement their income with marking and other teaching support work.
An upper-second-class Honours degree in a relevant subject, or international equivalent.
A first-class MMath or MPhys, or international equivalent, is preferred.
Applicants whose first language is not English require a minimum of IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), Pearson's PTE Academic Test 62 or equivalent.
International applicants may require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme, applicants will be informed of this in the offer letter.

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) sponsored PhD and integrated MRes/PhD studentships are being offered in a range of subject areas for 2012 entry. These studentships are normally for four years and include a tax-free maintenance grant of approximately £13,590 per year for UK students. EU students are eligible for a fees-only award.
