Programme Overview

The MSc Synthetic Biology is a one-year advanced Master's programme. It provides core synthetic biology skills with a significant focus on synthetic biology research and will also equip you with the necessary balance of molecular biology, engineering, computing and modelling skills necessary to position yourself ideally for careers in synthetic biology in industry or academia.

The programme is designed for students from both biological and computational backgrounds. Prior experience with computers or computer programming is not required. Students with mathematical, engineering or other scientific backgrounds are also welcome to apply.

This interdisciplinary programme is based in the School of Computing Science and taught jointly with the Schools of Mathematics and Statistics and Biology, and the Institute of Genetic Medicine.

You take compulsory modules, a research project and optional modules.

+Entrance Requirements

Normally an upper second-class Honours degree, or international equivalent, in any science discipline including biological sciences, engineering sciences, computing sciences, mathematics or physical sciences. We will also consider applicants on an individual basis with lower class Honours degrees, those with degrees in other areas, and those with non-standard qualifications and/or relevant experience.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent.

Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has rules for international students regarding minimum English language requirements.

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2013 entry should apply by Friday 12 July 2013 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
