The main objective of the degree is to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required of a wildlife manager. The programme will also focus on the specialist skills needed for UK Government agencies and academic jobs.
The MSc will provide a link between the theory and practice of wildlife management from the perspective of the regulatory authorities associated with UK wildlife management. You will have the opportunity to undertake:
• practical wildlife monitoring, surveillance and handling skills including ethics and risk assessment
• training in Home Office licensing
• training that covers the range from policy formulation and regulation in wildlife through the underlying ecological theory to the real-time application of wildlife management
The proposed MSc will be run jointly by the School of Biology at Newcastle and the National Wildlife Management Centre (NWMC) at Animal Health Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) (previously at Fera and CSL, York). AHVLA is the agency that provides advice to Defra on wildlife management, is involved with the development, assessment and implementation of policy associated with wildlife problems in the UK. It is concerned with invasive species, wildlife disease and has a large portfolio of research and management that is implemented at the National scale.
