Project description
Cell senescence is most often induced as a response to persistent telomere dysfunction, occurs in vivo and contributes to age-related diseases. However, the definition of senescence so far has been always limited to proliferation-competent cells and tissues. We have recently demonstrated that neurons develop a senescent-like phenotype that progresses with age. We hypothesise that a senescence-like phenotype in neurons contributes to the development of age-related diseases.
To assess the relevance of senescence in human brain ageing and neurodegeneration, the student will analyse brains from patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) for markers of cellular senescence. For this study the student will have access to one of the largest human brain banks in Europe available at the Institute for Ageing and Health (IAH).
In order to test causal relationships between neurodegeneration and ageing, the student will also evaluate late generation telomerase knock-out (TERC-/-) mice. Using these animals the student will assess behaviour and cognition as well as the spatial association between markers of senescence and neurodegeneration in brain. This project will allow the student to acquire research training in areas of cellular ageing and neurodegeneration in a unique research environment which has world renowned expertise in both.
Value of the Award and Eligibility
4-year studentship including stipend, University fees and travel allowance. Depending on how you meet the BBSRC’s eligibility criteria, you may be entitled to a full or a partial award. A full award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of £13,590 (2012/13). A partial award covers fees at the UK/EU rate only.
Person Specification
Candidates must have a first-class or upper-second-class BSc Honours degree in an appropriate scientific specialty.
How to Apply
You must complete the University's online postgraduate application form. Select “Master of Research/Doctor of Philosophy (Medical Sciences) – ageing and health” as the programme of study. Only mandatory fields need to be completed (no personal statement required) but you must attach a copy of your CV and a covering letter, quoting the title of the studentship and reference number IA062.
Closing date for applications
Prompt application is advised as this post is only available until a suitable candidate is appointed.
