Overview

Established in 1946, the Fulbright Scholarship programme aims to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries, through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills.

Overall, the Fulbright Programme has provided more than 318,000 U.S. and international participants, chosen for their academic excellence and leadership potential, with the opportunity to observe one another’s political, economic and cultural institutions, exchange ideas, and embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world's inhabitants. The Fulbright Programme awards approximately 8,000 grants annually.

In general, grants are one academic year in length—between 9 and 12 months, corresponding to the academic calendar in the country of study.
