If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of your language ability when you apply.
The English language test should have been taken within the preceding two years. We prefer the IELTS test but other tests, in particular TOEFL, are also acceptable. We also recognise the English language standard achieved through qualifications such as:
Some engineering subjects will accept IELTS 6.0, or equivalent, but most programmes require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL IBT 90 (internet-based), PTE Academic 62 or higher. Please check the English language requirements for your chosen research degree or taught programme.
Include a copy of your IETLS test certificate (or equivalent) when you apply. We accept photocopies, faxes and scanned versions of all documentation. If an original certificate is required, you will be asked for this.
If you need to improve your English before beginning your studies, INTO Newcastle University provide courses.
You will also take a short English language test when you arrive to work out if you need further English language support. If you are currently studying in a country where English is one of the official languages and you have the academic qualifications for your postgraduate programme, you will normally not need to take this English language test.

Please note that English language requirements for Tier 4 student visas were changed by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) on the 21 April 2011. All students requiring a CAS for degree level study are now required to demonstrate that they are competent in English language at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B2 or above. You are therefore required to hold a minimum of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) in all sub skills (listening, writing, reading and speaking).
