Changes to UKBA Tier 4 student visa English language requirements

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has revised its rules for student Tier 4 visa applications regarding English language ability.

The new rules state that international applicants whose first language is not English are required to show that they have a certain level of English ability. This has been identified by UKBA as follows:

  • is from a majority English speaking country; or
  • has completed an academic qualification, at least equivalent to a UK Bachelors degree which was taught in a majority English-speaking country; or
  •  is proficient at CEFR level B2 in each of the four sub-components of language learning (reading, writing, speaking and listening).  This is equivalent to at least an IELTS 5.5 in all of the four sub-components.

UKBA have provided further information on the changes and how it may affect you, and a new list of approved English language tests and how they meet the CEFR level B2 level.

In order for Newcastle University to issue a CAS for use in requesting a student Tier 4 visa, applicants must have met the English language conditions outlined above.
