Language learning

Taught programme students receive advice and support from their tutors.

Research degree students participate in our research training and development programmes.

Writing Development Centre

The Writing Development Centre in the Robinson Library provides academic writing tuition and support for students in all subject disciplines. The Centre offers:

  • lectures and workshops on a variety of topics, including writing a literature review and a dissertation proposal
  • one-to-one sessions with a writing tutor
  • advice on revising and proofreading your written work
  • advice on using sources in your writing without plagiarism  
  • extensive online resources on academic writing

Maths-Aid

The Maths-Aid drop-in centre, run by the School of Mathematics and Statistics, provides support for students from any discipline who need help with mathematics or statistics. This includes:

  • ongoing help with taught courses
  • preparation for exams
  • developing problem-solving and numerical skills
  • advice on graduate numerical skills, such as aptitude tests
  • providing leaflets and booklets to take away

Language Learning

If English is not your first language, INTO Newcastle University provides a number of services to assess and further develop your language skills.

The award-winning Language Resource Centre is free to all Newcastle University students. It provides materials and facilities for the research, learning, teaching and practice of over 50 foreign languages. Through the Tandem Learning Project you can also practice language skills with a native speaker on an exchange basis.

Learning Spaces

The Learning Zone facility in the King's Road Centre provides a flexible space for private study or group work. Wireless access is also available.

The Research Beehive, Old Library Building, is available to support our postgraduates. This includes meeting rooms, a library and social facilities where staff and students can exchange ideas and develop exciting new research concepts.

Culture Lab is a cutting-edge research facility that brings artists, scientists, engineers and social scientists together. Its focus is practice-driven research and development, reaching beyond the arts/science divide to build innovative partnerships and interdisciplinary methodologies. The facilities include:

  • multimedia studios
  • a live event space
  • work spaces equipped with the latest digital technology
