Our sports facilities cater for all abilities – from those who like to keep fit by occasionally visiting the gym to elite sportsmen and sportswomen.
Each year we lock oars with Durham in the annual University boat race and compete against Northumbria for the honour of lifting the Stan Calvert Memorial Cup.
Our on-campus sports centre houses a fitness suite and flexible sports halls and studios. Find out more about the indoor sport facilities and take a virtual tour of our Sports Centre.
We have a popular sport programme comprising exercise classes and intra mural leagues where you can set up teams and compete in football, mixed hockey, netball, basketball and rugby union.
We have over 60 student-led sports clubs. Our clubs welcome students of all abilities and, with professional coaching available across many of our activities, it's a great time to try something new.
The Students' Union also organises a Go Play taster programme for students who don’t want to commit to a particular sport.
A short drive from campus are our county-standard pitches and courts for rugby, football, cricket, tennis, hockey and lacrosse.
We also have a water sports centre on the banks of the River Tyne at Newburn which is home to the University’s rowing and canoeing clubs.
Visit the Sports Centre website for more about our outdoor facilities.
The quality of our facilities was confirmed when Newcastle was one of only four UK universities chosen as an official Games-Time Training Venue for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Track and field facilities are available at Gateshead International Stadium.
You can take part in other outdoor activities such as sailing, walking, riding, climbing and parachuting in the nearby countryside and the North East coast.
