The module aims to gain an appreciation of various research methods specific to uses of design as a research method and to acquire skills in conducting and communicating research, with a particular focus on design-based disciplines.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
This module provides a foundation on research methods, which will serve as an introduction to the MSc Design Research Project. Thus the principles introduced during lectures will be applied by students whilst undertaking their individual research projects.
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The assessed seminar presentations will encourage active engagement throughout the module and give an opportunity for the student to demonstrate broad knowledge of the topic covered with the more focused specialization developed as part of the second final submission. The final submission will allow students’ knowledge and understanding of research methods in the context of their own interests to be assessed. It will also be used to assess their key skills in the structuring of ideas and presenting them in writing, learning independently through self-directed study, and managing information.
ADDITIONAL RESIT INFORMATION:
The resit for this module will take place at the end of semester 2.
If a student fails ARC8082, he/she will be asked to resit the individual submission of the module.
If a student fails ARC8082 group work only, she/he would be asked to resit the group work only with an equivalent individual piece of work.
If a student fails ARC8082 for a second time, she/he will not be allowed to proceed with the dissertation.
