This is a taught doctorate that aims to provide a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of educational research. It is primarily designed for experienced professionals who wish to undertake part-time doctoral study whilst working full time within the field of education (eg schools, further education or higher education). However, the EdD is also available to full-time students who would like to build on their professional practice knowledge. The programme uses practitioner enquiry methodologies to facilitate a process of critical reflection on practice experiences and encourage a strategic approach to pedagogic innovation and change.
The programme provides flexibility in the choice and timing of modules and in the design and format of the research study and thesis. It comprises a taught element (200 credits) and a research element (340 credits).
Compulsory modules include: thinking critically about research methodology; research strategies and methods; information skills; qualitative methodology in the arts, humanities and social sciences; the nature of enquiry and explanation; introduction to quantitative methods; dissertation preparation.
Optional (specialist) modules, related to your own professional situation, can include: emotional intelligence and leadership; the management of change in educational organisations; the policy and practice of assessment; counselling, culture and communication; British studies; critical reflection on professional practice; contemporary issues in maths education; and economics for development - competition, innovation and entrepreneurship.
You then complete an empirical research study (50,000-word thesis), which should be related to an issue of professional concern or interest.
