Biomedicine

At Newcastle, our work covers the complete development cycle for new medicine and treatments for major chronic diseases, from basic science research, which identifies both the root causes of the disease and the agents that can be used to treat them, to working collaboratively with pharmaceutical companies to translate this research into clinical trials.

Our major research areas are: musculoskeletal disease (including autoimmune arthritis); the liver; diabetes; dermatology; applied immunobiology (including organ and haematogenous stem cell transplantation); uterine cell signalling; pharmacogenomics (including complex disease genetics); and toxicology. We also have a dedicated diagnostics and therapeutics research group that brings together staff and students who are working on medical engineering and bio-nanotechnology projects.

Postgraduate students are part of our research community. We regularly advertise funded MRes/PhD and PhD projects that enable you to work alongside researchers and senior scientists on field-leading projects connected to our main research themes. As a postgraduate student you will be registered with a University research institute. For many students this is the Institute for Cellular Medicine, which currently supports community of 119 doctoral research students from the UK, EU and overseas. You receive supervision and guidance from a dedicated team of research-active academics and participate in the research training and professional skills development programme run by the Medical Sciences Graduate School. Our success in developing the next generation of researchers is supported by our Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 results. Eighty per cent of our research was classed as internationally excellent’ or ‘internationally recognise with 15 per cent classed as ‘world leading’. Thirty five per cent of the papers in our submission resulted directly from PhD research.

Our specialist MRes programmes enable you to learn directly from the very latest research. The academics who teach on these programmes are all active in our research groups and MRes students use our extensive laboratory facilities for their supervised research projects. Due to the research emphasis of these programmes, they are suitable for those who are considering PhD or MD studies, graduates who are planning a research career in industry or intercalating MB BS students.
