Our range of taught programmes and research degrees is designed to support the career development of recent graduates, newly qualified teachers and other established education professionals.
We currently offer Initial Teacher Training courses (PGCE) at both Primary level (5–11 age range) and Secondary level (11–18 age range), which lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We have a number of places for primary French specialists and at secondary level we offer biology, chemistry, English, geography, history, mathematics, modern languages (French, German, and Spanish), physics, and religious education. An extension course in German is also available as a pre-PGCE subject knowledge enhancement.
The MEd in Education offers five specialist pathways: educational leadership and management; inclusive education; educational technology; international development and education; and pedagogy and learning. These postgraduate professional development routes are enhanced by the work of the North Leadership Centre and the new iLAB facility. The EdD enables you to undertake part-time doctoral study and provides the flexibility and scope to undertake a research project that relates directly to your own professional context.
The work of our two dedicated research centres informs education practice. The Research Centre for Learning and Teaching (CfLAT) focuses on the best ways for learners to acquire skills, knowledge and understanding in educational settings.
Our globally influential EG West centre examines the ways in which choice, competition and entrepreneurship can enhance opportunity and outcomes. This emphasis on international development and education feeds directly into our teaching and research programmes at Masters’ level and beyond. For those who wish to combine studies in education with communications or applied linguistics, our Integrated PhD route affords the opportunity to enquire more deeply into counselling theory and practice.
The Doctor of Applied Educational Psychology (DAppEdPsy) programme is currently funded by the Children’s Workforce Development Council, and provides 10 places for UK students to undergo the initial training required to become an educational psychologist in England. The Doctor of Educational Psychology (DEdPsy) is designed for qualified practising educational psychologists who would like to complete a CPD doctorate in a supportive environment.
