Law

Newcastle has a long tradition of excellence in the teaching and research of law. We are the longest established law school in the North East of England and our graduates have an excellent track record of employment within the law profession, international/non-governmental organisations, the public sector and in academia.

We offer expert LLM teaching in the areas of international commercial law, financial regulation, corporate finance and governance, movement of persons in a global world, public international law, international criminal law, international dispute settlement as well as environmental law subjects. Our expert research supervision for PhD, MPhil and LLM by research covers the same subjects as our taught programmes, and also includes research opportunities in European law, private property and tort law, criminal law, criminal justice and criminology, public law, human rights, family law, law and literature, refugee law, charity law, national security and legal theory.

The 2010 National Student Satisfaction Survey places Newcastle Law School as the second best law school in the UK. The 2010 results further underline the overwhelming recognition from the student body of the consistent excellence of the student provision at Newcastle Law School.

We are highly supportive of our postgraduate students, placing strong emphasis on personal development. This is reflected in the recent Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) (March–May 2010) in which the Law School scored very highly. In the survey postgraduate students were asked to assess among others the teaching methods, the support they received and whether the course was intellectually stimulating. Moreover, the 2008 Teaching Quality Audit conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council for England praised the ‘physical identity and coherence of the school’, which is both ‘collegiate and welcoming’ and provides an excellent academic environment. Our commitment to international collaboration is evident in a strong international research student community and the development of targeted strategic links with a number of overseas law schools, currently including institutions in China, Siberia, the USA and Turkey.

In addition, the Newcastle Human Rights Research Group joined the Association of Human Rights Institutes, a European academic network currently funded by COST (EU) for the promotion of human rights.

Our research strength was acknowledged in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, which classed 85 per cent of our research as ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘internationally recognised’. We host a variety of conferences and run a varied and active programme of themed seminars, which enable our postgraduate students to network with peers and academics from other universities and organisations and gain experience of presenting their work.

We offer excellent facilities for postgraduate study including our own Law Library containing over 35,000 volumes, discussion rooms for group work and Wi-Fi availability throughout. Research students have their own dedicated research room and office space.

We also offer a number of scholarships for postgraduate studies. More information is available at www.ncl.ac.uk/nuls/postgraduate/funding.htm
