The use of the sea and waterways for energy, transport and leisure is growing rapidly and Newcastle is leading the development of new solutions for sustainable marine industries.
We were the first marine school in the UK to provide a single base for all education, innovation and research and now enjoy an international reputation, attracting students from over 40 countries each year.
Our staff undertake research for the maritime sector and we have a range of expertise in marine technology and in the interface between environmental sustainability and marine science and technology. We supervise postgraduate research projects in any area of fundamental or applied research related to the shipping, maritime logistics, shipbuilding and repair and offshore industries. Expanding areas of interest include marine and offshore renewable energy and technologies for a sustainable marine environment. As an MPhil or PhD student, you will be placed within a research group, enabling you to discuss your work with staff and fellow students whose interests match your own.
In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, our research was assessed alongside researchers from Mechanical and Systems Engineering. Sixty-five per cent of the work was classed as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
Our students benefit from specialist facilities, which include: well-equipped laboratories with engine test beds and measurement rigs; workshops that allow prototype equipment to be produced in-house; a hydrodynamics laboratory; the UK’s only cavitation tunnel; a new research vessel; and computer laboratories.
All of our programmes are taught in Newcastle with the exception of Marine Technology (International), which is delivered off-campus in Singapore and Dubai. Most taught programmes have the option of a preliminary year, which enables you to undertake technical modules before starting your chosen MSc.
