In the modern world, communication across different cultures and languages is constant and crucial. This means that skilled and qualified translators and interpreters are in high demand. Here at Newcastle, we offer postgraduate training in translation (written transfer) and interpreting (spoken transfer) to help you develop the skills for a career in this exciting field.
Our programmes enable you to specialise in English plus one language from Chinese, French, German or Spanish. The Chinese translating and interpreting programmes offer four pathways: translating; interpreting; translating and interpreting; and translation studies. Depending on your entry qualifications, you can take the standard entry two-year route or the intensive one-year route. Professional Translating for European Languages is an exciting one-year MA that provides the training to become a professional translator, working between English and French, German or Spanish. For 2012 entry, we may have AHRC funding for our MA programmes. This funding will cover UK/EU tuition fees and provide an annual stipend.
We also undertake research, and offer research degree supervision, in translation and interpreting studies. Our main research purpose is to find out more about how translating and interpreting works in different contexts (language, culture and usage by professional translators and interpreters). Our research is multi-faceted and brings together a number of different subjects that complement each other and foster new ideas, including linguistics and literature, culture, identity and professional studies, psychology and philosophy.
We have excellent study facilities for our postgraduate students. We have two state-of-the-art interpreting suites for simultaneous interpreting training. These suites are used for timetabled sessions and are also accessible outside class time.
You will be able to record speech materials and your own interpreting performance so that you can listen again for practice or self-evaluation. The digital speech bank is another useful resource for extra interpreting self-study. Modules on our translation programmes cover all areas of technical, scientific, legal, medical and literary translation and provide training in areas such as information technology for translators and interpreters and subtitling. Our language labs are installed with the latest translation and subtitling software. The Language Resource Centre provides computing, television and DVD resources in over 50 languages and you can use dedicated postgraduate facilities such as the postgraduate office, common room and study room with networked PCs.
