Aims

There is a growing industry in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) addressing transport problems around the world. This new MSc programme will enable you to develop a systematic understanding of ITS and Intelligent Mobility, and also gain a critical awareness of current problems in the field, informed by the latest research. You will also develop a comprehensive understanding of appropriate techniques and be able to apply this practically to the planning, management and operation of transport systems.

This programme is suitable for those with backgrounds in computing, electronics/ electrical engineering, numeracy or transport.

Programme Description

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) undergraduate first degree or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng / BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.  See www.jbm.org.uk for further information.

You typically take the following compulsory modules (100 credits): intelligent mobility – policy and practice; intelligent mobility – systems and services; quantitative methods; transport policy in practice; Intelligent Transport Systems and e-Services; intelligent mobility – policy and practice; intelligent mobility – systems and services; transport modelling; road safety; characteristics of public transport systems; economic and environmental appraisal of transport activities; and a transport-related field class.

You must also undertake a research project written up as a dissertation (80 credits).

The taught modules are typically delivered in a block format. A week of study is usually followed by a week of private study allowing time for assimilation, reflective learning and completion of formative coursework.

After completion of the taught material and examinations, you will have the opportunity to undertake a field trip to Germany (or elsewhere as circumstances allow), to see how transport systems operate in less familiar environments, and attend lectures and presentations on transport research and practice in a contrasting context.

The degree programme is supplemented by research seminars, site visits and engagement with local industry and practitioners from professional institutions.
