Aims

The programme provides specialised postgraduate training in the rapidly growing interdisciplinary field of the history of medicine.

Programme Description

The programme offers comprehensive coverage of the history of medicine from classical antiquity to the twenty-first century and provides the necessary research training that will either link into further study at PhD level or act as a stand-alone MA. Successful completion of the programme enables you to take part in the annual Wellcome Trust PhD studentship competition.

The programme is open to students from both the humanities and social sciences (eg history, classics, philosophy, religious studies, art history, archaeology, psychology, sociology) and to candidates with a health care or medical sciences background wishing to take the programme either as an intercalated degree within their medical training, or as an historical/ethical underpinning of their personal professional development.

You take 100 credits of compulsory taught modules which typically include: research methods in history; dissertation training; an introduction to the history of medicine; and special studies in the history of medicine. A further 20 credits must be taken in semester 2 from within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The programme is delivered through a series of lectures, seminars, supervised self-study and tutorials, and is assessed by formal examination and written work. Finally you write a 14,000-word dissertation (60 credits).
