This programme provides you with a broad range of interdisciplinary skills and knowledge needed in the bioinformatics industry and academia.
This interdisciplinary programme is based in the School of Computing Science and taught jointly with the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the School of Mathematics and Statistics.
You take compulsory modules (60 credits) and optional modules (40 credits), followed by a six-month individual project that may be taken within the University or with a bioinformatics or pharmaceutical company (80 credits). Compulsory modules typically include: bioinformatics theory and applications; bioinformatics programming in Java; computing for bioinformatics or fundamentals of cell and molecular biology. Optional modules enable you to tailor your degree to either a computational/numerical theme or a more biologically oriented theme.
A minimum of a second-class Honours degree, or international equivalent, in any science discipline including biological sciences, engineering sciences, computing sciences, mathematics or physical sciences. Equivalent industrial and academic experience is also considered. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent.
Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.
