Aims

The aim of the programme is to give those without a formal qualification in computing science a solid foundation in the subject.

Programme Description

If taken full time, your first nine months are devoted to taught modules (120 credits) which examine three main threads.

In the programming thread, you learn the Java programming language.

The computer architecture thread covers the basic structure of a digital computer and computer networks.

The software engineering thread considers the problems of the design specification and implementation of large computing systems produced by many designers and programmers.

Practical classes are a key component of this part of the programme. There is also a substantial amount of group project work, giving you practical experience of software engineering and professional issues.

The final three months are devoted to an individual project, culminating in a dissertation describing the work completed (60 credits).

Entrance Requirements

A minimum of a second-class Honours degree, or equivalent, in any subject. Graduates of subjects related to computer science will also be considered, but your application will be dealt with on an individual basis because of the potential overlap of your first degree with the modules in the programme. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), or equivalent.

Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.

Tier 4 Student Visas (International Applicants)

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has now revised its rules for Tier 4 student visa applications regarding English language ability. You are now required to hold a minimum of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) in all sub skills (listening, writing, reading and speaking) to be eligible to apply for a Tier 4 visa.

Please note that the University’s English language requirements are normally higher (see above).
