Aims

This programme aims to develop the specialist skills and multidisciplinary knowledge needed for careers in ecological consultancy. An emphasis is placed on developing the business skills needed to define and evaluate environmental problems in a variety of contexts within a commercial framework, including example case studies taken from real situations.

Programme Description

You take seven compulsory modules (70 credits), a further 30 credits of optional modules and complete a research project, often with an environment establishment, leading to a thesis (80 credits). Compulsory modules typically include: environmental impact assessment; the environment business; GIS and remote sensing; foundations of environmental law and policy; the environment business; and quantitative techniques, experimental design and data analysis.

Optional modules may include: bioremediation; ecosystem management; hydroecology; ecosystem management; trees – ecology, management and environmental impacts; ecological survey techniques; sustainable development and environmental change.

You may be asked to contribute to the cost of essential field classes; however, some financial assistance may be available.

Entrance Requirements

Normally a second-class Honours degree in a related discipline (eg environmental sciences, biological sciences). Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. However, applicants with a minimum of IELTS 5.5, or equivalent, will be accepted on condition that they undertake an appropriate pre-sessional English language course at INTO Newcastle University.

Tier 4 Student Visas (International Applicants)

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has now revised its rules for Tier 4 student visa applications regarding English language ability. You are now required to hold a minimum of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) in all sub skills (listening, writing, reading and speaking) to be eligible to apply for a Tier 4 visa.

Please note that the University’s English language requirements are normally higher (see above).

Typical Funding

UK/EU students - the majority of students are self-funded but some may be eligible for fees assistance by employers; EPSRC.
International students - own government; University scholarships.

How to Apply

There is no closing date for this programme. However, international students applying for September 2012 entry should apply by Friday 13 July 2012 to ensure that they have time to put appropriate arrangements in place.

Please note: As a formal condition of the offer to study at Newcastle University, students from outside the UK/EU are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship for their chosen programme. The deposit payment is non refundable, but will be deducted from tuition fees upon registration.
