Aims

This programme is accredited by the Health Professions Council and recognised by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists of Great Britain, and aims to train professionally qualified speech and language therapists. Successful graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council; this registration is obligatory to practise in the UK.

Programme Description

The teaching uses a case-based, problem-solving approach. In your first year you complete 180 credits of compulsory modules, which typically include: physiological foundations for speech and language; anatomical foundations for speech and language; phonetics; cases: phonology, semantics, sentence, processing; clinical practice; supports for clinical practice; normal language and development; psychology of language and cognitive processes; educational setting and literacy.

You also undertake a clinical practicum consisting of 12 sessions at the University’s clinic for children; 12 sessions in the University’s Aphasia Clinic; some observations in nurseries; and a six-week block clinical placement in the summer. In your second year you complete another 180 credits of compulsory modules. You also take part in 12 clinical sessions administering group therapy and complete another six-week block clinical placement. You are assessed through course work, written examinations, in-course assessment of the clinical practicum, case presentations and in-course class tests. An important element of Year 2 is the extended case report, where you assess and manage one case, giving intensive input, and write up your findings.
