This programme is designed for applicants who have studied materials science or materials engineering as part of an undergraduate degree in science or engineering and want to pursue their studies of materials-related topics to a higher level. It is essentially a conversion course, and is especially appropriate if you have a degree in physics, chemistry or related science subjects, or in chemical engineering.
The one-year programme includes a major research project in the form of a dissertation (60 credits). The remaining 120 credits are allocated to taught modules. Subject areas include: advanced materials and processes; nanomaterials; materials and fabrication; joining technology; lifetime prediction and design for reliability; manufacturing technology; business and environmental management; sustainable industry.
The two-year programme is designed for candidates (especially from overseas) who require extra English tuition, or who need further training in certain other key background skills. You take a preparatory year comprising English language and other relevant introductory modules plus engineering modules in materials and fabrication, integrated design, sustainable processing and design of experiments. You then continue into the second year and take the one-year version of the programme as described above.
