Aims

This programme has been developed, and is delivered, by Newcastle University with Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It provides recent graduates and professionals within the NHS, ancillary services and industry with a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in planning, conducting, analysing and writing up clinical research in the context of your own research roles, responsibilities and interests.

Programme Description

The programme is structured so that you can complete modules and progress through the awards. If you complete 60, 120 or 180 credits within the agreed timescale you will graduate with a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Certificate (e-learning), Postgraduate Diploma (e-learning) Postgraduate Diploma or MClinRes, respectively.

For the Certificate, you study three compulsory modules: research governance and ethics; study design and data interpretation; and writing for research. For the Diploma, in addition to these three modules, you also study a compulsory module in designing a research proposal and two optional modules from a list that may include: clinical trials; ageing and health; clinical epidemiology; and developing your career in clinical research. For the MClinRes, in addition to the modules outlined above for the Diploma, you also write a clinical research dissertation.

You are expected to attend a number of teaching days on Newcastle University's campus during the academic year, unless you are doing the PGCert (e-learning) or PGDip (e-learning). These dates can be found on the Clinical Research course pages. In addition, learning is supported by self directed study and you are allocated a tutor who guides you through the programme.

An e-learning pathway of study is also available.
