As an established civic university that is a member of the Russell Group, Newcastle has always been recognised for its basic and applied research and we continue that tradition today.
In 2009 we attracted £87.8 million through new research grants and contracts and our income from UK research council awards puts us amongst the top 10 universities in the UK.
We contribute to major European and international research networks and the quality of our work is world class.
The latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 identified research that is ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in all of our submitted subject areas. Our strong research profile enables us to attract top academics and researchers from across the world and their global experience and perspective informs our research approach.
Alongside our commitment to conventional discipline based research, we also have a strong ethos of supporting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches. Our research network extends across campus joining staff and postgraduate students in our 23 academic schools, 21 research centres and 13 research institutes.
